Carole Yater Sloan, 80, of Madison, passed away Monday, April 22, 2019, at Franciscan Hospice House in Indianapolis, Indiana. Born on February 27, 1939, in Madison, she was the daughter of Melvin James and Martha Madge (Oldaker) Yater.

In 1957 Carole graduated from Madison High School, where she was Custer Oratorical Contest winner, class officer, and a member of the band, Girls’ Athletic Association, Sunshine Club, and the Honor Society. Carole was an active member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority at Hanover College from which she graduated in 1961. She received her master’s degree in elementary education from Indiana University Southeast in 1971.
Carole began her teaching career in Martinsville, Indiana, before returning to Madison where she taught at E.O. Muncie. She then stayed home with her children for several years before working at the optometry office of her husband, David. Returning to education she taught for 20 years at Southwestern Elementary in Hanover.
As a child, Carole attended Trinity United Methodist and Madison Presbyterian churches. Later she became a member of Christ Episcopal Church where she was an involved parishioner, serving on the Vestry and Altar Guild. In 1974 Carole and her husband, David, went on a Volunteer Optometrist in Service to Humanity mission trip to Haiti to provide examinations and glasses. Together they also participated in the Madison Ulster Project, and traveled to Ireland in 2005 to attend its international conference.
Carole was involved in several other community organizations including Hanover Chapter 525 of the Order of the Eastern Star, Tri Kappa Women’s Sorority, Indiana Teachers’ Association, Indiana Retired Teachers’ Association, and Historic Madison Inc. She was active in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts as a leader. She served as a docent for Historic Madison, Inc.
Carole was a kind and compassionate woman with a sweet spirit, who loved spending time with family and friends. She was a devoted daughter, mother, and grandmother. She was her children’s biggest cheerleader. She was also host mother to six exchange students from four countries: Horacio, Johanna, Sandra, Sara, Rocio, and Jan. She was an avid reader, card player, theater lover, world traveler, IU basketball fan, and lover of fine wine.
Carole will be missed by her children: Sheila Butler and her husband, Prince, of Bloomington, Indiana, and their children, Nate, Cameron, and Ryan; Eric Prime and his wife, Karla, of Bargersville, Indiana, and their children, Andrew, Alden, and Alec; Shannon Dattilo and her husband, Daniel, of Madison, Indiana, and their children, Devin, Adrianna, and Brycen; Shelli Anderson and her husband, Mark, of Bargersville, Indiana, and their children, Gavin, Samuel, and Sydney; and her “sister” cousin, Sarah Jane Green and her husband, Gene, of Hanover, Indiana; several other cousins, and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Dr. David Weeks Sloan in 2013, and her parents, Melvin James Yater in 1958, and Martha Madge Yater in 1997.
The Reverend Evelyn Wheeler will conduct funeral services at 2:00 PM Saturday, May 18, 2019 at Christ Episcopal Church, 506 Mulberry Street, Madison. Inurnment will follow immediately afterward at the church columbarium.
Friends and family may visit at the Lytle Welty Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Vail Chapel, 117 Holt Drive, Madison's Hilltop from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM Friday, May 17, 2019. The Hanover Chapter 525 of the Order of the Eastern Star will honor Carole with a special ceremony at 6:45 PM.
